What do you do when your fake engagement starts to feel too real…

Aspiring clothes designer Victoria Scott spends her days working in a bar in Chelsea, and her evenings designing vintage clothes, dreaming of one day opening her own boutique. But these aspirations are under threat from the new department store opening at the end of her road. She needs a Christmas miracle, but one is not forthcoming.

Oliver Russell’s Christmas is not looking very festive right now. His family’s new London department store opening is behind schedule, and on top of that his interfering, if well meaning, mother is pressing him to introduce his girlfriend to her. A girlfriend who does not exist. He needs a diversion. Something to keep his mother from interfering while he focuses on the business.

When Oliver meets Victoria, he offers a proposition: pretend to be his girlfriend at the opening of his store and he will provide an opportunity for Victoria to showcase her designs. But what starts as a business arrangement soon becomes something more tempting, as the fake relationship starts to feel very real. But when secrets in Victoria’s past are exposed will Oliver walk away, or will they both follow their hearts and find what neither knew they were looking for…

I picked this up from my trusty favourite sells-everything shop The Works in their 3 for £5 offer. As a bit of a fan of Toff from her jaunts on TV, I was intrigued by the idea of her writing a book.

It starts with Oliver at the bar near his soon-to-open department store, ignoring his mum's texts who's trying to set him up on dates for the opening and is distracted by the pretty brunette behind the bar. Victoria is trying to keep herself afloat financially while following her passion for clothes making and the department store could be death for the small local businesses she buys items from. When she finally finds out who Oliver is, she explains her feelings and they compromise. He will let the local shops hold stalls if she will act as his girlfriend at the opening.

This was a slow start for me. Well, the entire book felt rather slow and was very happy and gentle. I love some angst in my romances so I struggled with this one. I used to enjoy reading Mills & Boon books. I started reading them almost twenty years ago when I was going into my teen years and I fell in love with them and read a lot of them. They were my introduction to romance books and I still have a few copies of my favourites - some from the 80's! - and even they weren't as sweet and innocent as this book was. We don't even have sex scenes. It's all fade-to-black!

I actually skimmed the last 50% or so of this book just to see what the issue that broke them up would turn out to be and to see how they got back together afterwards. I can't say that I was impressed by either.

I don't think her not being able to have children should be that big of an issue, either for her or any man who loved her. The fact that she makes it into such a big issue annoyed me!

I won't be reading more of this series.
