Description:

Play with fire, pay the price.

Leila’s years on the carnie circuit were certainly an education. What she didn’t learn: how to be a vampire, or how to be married to the most famous vampire of them all. Adjusting to both has Leila teetering on a knife edge between passion and peril, and now the real danger is about to begin…

Vlad must battle with a centuries-old enemy whose reach stretches across continents and whose strength equals his own. It isn’t like Vlad to feel fear, but he does…for Leila, because his enemy knows she is Vlad’s greatest weakness. As friend and foe alike align against him—and his overprotectiveness drives Leila away—Vlad’s love for his new bride could be the very thing that dooms them both…

Review:

Now that I have all the books in this series, I just have to read them all!

This one starts several weeks after the last with Leila now a vampire and trying to find some of Szilagyi's cohorts while at a masked ball hosted by her husband, Vlad. They aren't sure who are allies and who are enemies any more after the events of the previous book. They travel the globe looking for answers from Romania to Las Vegas and New Orleans before finally locating him.

I actually like how much Vlad is starting to...erm...mellow? He used to be this hard man who was just trying to do the best for his people but now he's fallen in love and is adjusting to having Leila be a great match for him - she doesn't always need his help - and her pluckiness means she can endure a lot before she even thinks of breaking and he admires that a lot about her.

And then it threw us a curve ball at the end. We assumed everything would be over once Szilagyi was out of the picture but nope, they still have one more thing to do. I've already started book 4 just to see how this series is going to end. Off to finish it now!

Description:

Dating the Prince of Darkness has its challenges...

Leila's psychic abilities have been failing her, and now she isn't sure what the future holds. If that weren't enough, her lover, Vlad, has been acting distant. Though Leila is a mere mortal, she's also a modern woman who refuses to accept the cold shoulder treatment forever–especially from the darkly handsome vampire who still won't admit that he loves her.

Like choosing between eternal love and a loveless eternity...

Soon circumstances send Leila back to the carnival circuit, where tragedy strikes. And when she finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who may be closer than she realizes, Leila must decide who to trust– the fiery vampire who arouses her passions like no other or the tortured knight who longs to be more than a friend? With danger stalking her every step of the way, all it takes is one wrong move to damn her for eternity.

Review:

It's been a while since I read the first book in this series - 5 years! - but I remember enough to jump straight into this one.

So this starts with Leila sitting down for a formal meal with Vlad and other important vampires and him offering her a ring - one offered to every other member of his House - only Leila was hoping for an engagement ring and a declaration of love. In her disappointment and anger she decides to leave Vlad and go and rejoin Marty on the carny circuit, only for an explosion to take out the trailer they were travelling in and finding out it was meant for her. Leila has no idea who she can trust anymore but it isn't long until she's back under Vlad's protection.

I'll admit I was a little worried for a while when Vlad and Leila went their separate ways but it all worked out in the end. It was a bit of a roller coaster of emotions from the beginning but I'm glad to say that Vlad redeemed himself big time. And even Leila began to see how wrong she'd gotten things in regards to her Dark Prince.

I'm not going to go into more details because that would totally spoil this one. I've already bought book 3 and 4 and I'm off to start the next book after that sudden ending! I need to know what happens next.

Description:

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar.

He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out.

When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight―telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass.

You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend-smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married.

He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he'd done.

Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant.

Only it turned out, the man I'd just told off wasn't the right guy.

Oops. My mistake.

Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology.

I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right?

That's what I thought...until I walked into class the next morning.

Well, hello Professor West, I'm your new teaching assistant.

I'll be working under you...figuratively speaking.

Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing―working under Professor West.

This was going to be interesting...

Review:

I bought this a few months ago because i have really enjoyed this authors books in the past.

This one starts with Rachel out at the bar she works at with her friend Ava, consoling her friend after finding out that the guy she's been seeing for the last month or so is married with three kids. Rachel sees the guy in the bar and has a stern word with him...or maybe she told off the wrong guy. The next day she's late to her music lecture, where she's also meeting the new Professor for the first time and letting him know she'll be his TA. Professor Caine West just happens to be the same she told off last night and if the sexual tension between them wasn't bad then, then working under him now is going to throw some challenges at them.

I was drawn into this quickly. I was intrigued by the dynamic of the two main characters. The mystery of not when would they do the deed - because it was obvious they would! - but how long would it take before the tension snapped. I do love a bit of angst in my romances and this one was crazy full of it. One minute they're arguing, the next they're ripping each others clothes off. I actually quite liked that about it.

I have classed this as erotica(esque) because the sex is rather graphic and more erotic than a lot of other books I've read for a while.

There was also a "fifteen years ago" chapter thrown in every so often that showed a younger Caine as he suffered through helping out at his local church that was rather cleverly thought out in my opinion. I didn't figure out how that was going to tie into the story until a little before Caine started to put two and two together himself.

I do enjoy this author's book and I will definitely be reading more of her books in the future.

Description:

Jamie Nolan is a young cop on his first undercover assignment, sent to investigate Dmitri Teplov, a suspected major player in the Russian mafia. Jamie knows better than to get involved with the gorgeous nightclub owner. But right from the start, the spark of attraction between the two of them is undeniable.

Everything about Dmitri is just so unexpected. He’s sweet and shy, and has a nerdy side that Jamie finds irresistible. Can this man really be a criminal?

No way should this thing between them be happening. Getting involved with Dmitri Teplov was never part of the plan. But sometimes, the best plan is the one you make up as you go along.

Review:

I've had this on my Kindle since 2015; my earliest book I still have to read at present.

So this starts with Jamie meeting his best friend to tell her of his first undercover role, where he needs to do a bit of recon at a club owned by the Russian Mafia. He heads out and catches the eye of the owner Dmitri Keplov and feels an instant connection with him that appears to be mutual. Jamie spends the night with him and feels himself falling for the guy but Dmitri tells him that he's engaged to be married to a woman in ten months. Jamie, despite everything, tells him he'll spend the next few months with him, taking a leave of absence from work and telling his family he's dating the gangster - which goes down like a lead balloon when his family is a cop family.

I don't know about this one. Maybe I put it off for so long because I knew, on some level, that I wouldn't get along with this. It's just so insta-love! Known each other a day or two and declaring their love for each other. The whole mafia thing. It was all just a little unbelievable and I know it's fiction, but really?

It was just too flowery. I like a bit of angst in my stories and this was just way too happy.

I actually ended up flicking through the last few pages - after the showdown with the bad guy - because I wasn't feeling it anymore.

Description:

I want vengeance so badly that I can almost taste it. It's all I've ever wanted. So, I did what anyone in my unique position would do. I slapped on a secret identity and became an internationally renowned thief, known as The Fox. Nobody knows me. Nobody can catch me.

Or so I thought...

It turns out; I have what they want. Special abilities. And trust me, these abilities are coveted--and dangerous. Now, I don't know who to trust or where to go. Peril lurks on every corner as I try to uncover my past and origin. Teaming up with unlikely allies may be my only chance at survival or my biggest mistake. Only time will tell.

I'm Kit Davenport and this is only the beginning.

Review:

I bought this a little while ago because the description had me intrigued.

This starts with Kit out on a mission to steal something and leaving behind her calling card of a small vixen - for her namesake and alias, The Fox. The next day she's talking with her best friend and tech guru about the mission when they realise that what they stole has a tracker and in a panic, Kit drowns it in a drink not realising until too late that it will draw attention to their location. When she suddenly starts meeting new random people in her small town she's wary but it's only when she's almost abducted that she realises how close to home the problem may be.

I'll admit it took a while for me to get into this. I was on the verge of giving up on it when it suddenly got a little interesting with Kit's abduction. Everything kicked into high gear for a little while.

I didn't realise that the main story arc was going to stretch across all of the series. I assumed that we'd have some definite answers by the end and I feel like we didn't really learn anything truly helpful.

As for the romance/reverse harem aspect. I wasn't entirely pulled into it. She's slept with two of the five guys by the end of this and not with the one guy I expected her to - and who I would have understood her sleeping with. There is an appeal to them all, in one way or another, but I was definitely shipping her with this particular guy.

I'm not sure if I'll be continuing the series.

Description:

Picking up where Frozen Heat left off, top NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat pursues the elusive former CIA station chief who ordered the execution of her mother over a decade ago. For the hunt, Nikki teams once again with her romantic partner, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Jameson Rook, and their quest for the old spy and the motive behind the past murder unearths an alarming terror plot-which is anything but ancient history. It is lethal. It is now. And it has already entered its countdown phase.

Complicating Heat's mission to bring the rogue spy to justice and thwart the looming terror event, a serial killer begins menacing the Twentieth Precinct and her homicide squad is under pressure to stop him, and soon. The frightening murderer, known for his chilling stealth, not only has singled out Nikki as the exclusive recipient of his taunting messages, he then boldly names his next victim: Detective Heat.

Review:

It's been a very long time since I read the previous four books in this series and I also have book 6 to read so here goes.

This starts with Nikki going to a crime scene where a health inspector type guy has been killed and placed in the pizza oven. He's found with a bit of colourful string that is then found at several other murders and before long, Nikki realises that there is a serial killer on the loose. Add in the mystery from her past involving her mothers murder and she hardly has time to sleep.

This book has been sitting on my Kindle for six years so my tasted have changed quite a bit in that time. I did like this, mainly reading so I could find out who killed all those people but it felt so loooooong. And complicated at times. I couldn't entirely keep up.

I'm not sure if I'll be continuing the series.

Description:

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner.

That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram's cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life - tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he's the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan's quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to.

It isn't until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can't stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.

Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.

Review:

I picked this up from a second hand book website because I tend to like this authors work. I didn't realise it would be a signed copy!

So this starts with a prologue of a young Lachlan and the bad childhood he endured. We then jump to Kayla in the present as she enjoys drinks with her two best friends, only for them to be joined by their other halves and Lachlan - their cousin. Kayla hasn't interacted with him much but she can't help but be attracted to the strong silent man and the more time she spends with him, the more her attraction grows. Lachlan isn't staying in San Francisco for long, only here to help out his cousin, but the more time he spends around Kayla the more the ice around his heart starts to crack.

I wasn't pulled into this straight away. It started alright but I think Lachlan's cool exterior put me off a bit. I didn't understand Kayla's obsession with him at all and therefore when it finally led up to a sex scene I just skipped it all together. By that point I didn't care about the characters and I just decided to give up.

Signed copy or not, I think I'll be donating it to my work's charity book sale.

Description:

You’d think a billion dollars, a professional hockey team and a six-bedroom mansion on the Promenade would satisfy a guy. You’d be wrong.

For seven years Rebecca has brightened my office with her wit and her smile. She manages both my hockey team and my sanity. I don’t know when I started waking in the night, craving her. All I know is that one whiff of her perfume ruins my concentration. And her laugh makes me hard.

When Rebecca gets hurt, I step in to help. It’s what friends do. But what friends don’t do is rip off each others’ clothes for a single, wild night together.

Now she’s avoiding me. She says we’re too different, and it can never happen again. So why can’t we keep our hands off each other?

Review:

So a while ago I read Rookie Move and we met Nate and Rebecca in that one and you could just tell that something was going to happen between the two..

This starts with Rebecca going on the ice to have a word with the team/their manager in just her chuck's when she slips and bangs her head, leading to a bad concussion. She's given medical leave and struggles to get better even when her boss Nate let's her stay at his. She's missing her hockey games and with Nate's influence she finally gets help from a doctor who knows what's wrong. Rebecca's feelings towards Nate took a tumble when he moved her from being his PA to working at the stadium and she finally plucks up the courage to ask him why, only to be taken off guard by his answer.

I don't know about this one. I enjoyed their romance but I felt like it could have been a heck of a lot easier and smoother going if they'd just listened to each other and taken the chance! The first 40% or so wasn't really in any way romantic though feelings were starting to emerge at that point. It just seemed to take a long time for them to get together.

I do like this group of people but I'm not the biggest sports fan so I did skip over the hockey stuff because as a Brit I have no idea how it all works. I wouldn't mind reading more of this group but I have a lot of books to be getting on with right now.

Description:

Welcome to The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar. I’m Sam Quinn, the werewolf book nerd in charge. I run my business by one simple rule: Everyone needs a good book and a stiff drink, be they vampire, wicche, demon, or fae. No wolves, though. Ever. I have my reasons.

I serve the supernatural community of San Francisco. We’ve been having some problems lately. Okay, I’m the one with the problems. The broken body of a female werewolf washed up on my doorstep. What makes sweat pool at the base of my spine, though, is realizing the scars she bears are identical to the ones I conceal. After hiding for years, I’ve been found.

A protection I’ve been relying on is gone. While my wolf traits are strengthening steadily, the loss also left my mind vulnerable to attack. Someone is ensnaring me in horrifying visions intended to kill. Clive, the sexy vampire Master of the City, has figured out how to pull me out, designating himself by personal bodyguard. He’s grumpy about it, but that kiss is telling a different story. A change is taking place. It has to. The bookish bartender must become the fledgling badass.

I’m a survivor. I’ll fight fang and claw to protect myself and the ones I love. And let’s face it, they have it coming.

Review:

I was drawn into this from pretty early on. It may have been the glances she kept throwing towards a certain vampire but I was intrigued. And then the fun never stopped. It was one thing after another for poor Sam.

This starts with Sam, as mentioned above, throwing glances at a certain attractive vampire before something falls into the water in view of the giant window that shows views of the San Francisco waters and gets bashed continuously into the glass until Sam asks a patron to go and rescue the body. The female wolf has the same injuries as Sam received years ago and before long she finds herself under constant attack from unknown enemies.

There were a lot of things I liked about this: Sam's bar and bookstore in the cliffs of San Francisco with the giant window that gets submerged during high tide and is about level with the sea during low tide; her relationship with Clive and how it grew slowly and naturally; Sam's progression from almost timid lone wolf to confident arse-kicker; the way her friends rallied around her at all times.

I honestly want to read this entire series to see where else this is going to go. We still have so many unanswered questions and unresolved issues going on in the background. Sam seems to be at the top of everyones kill list and I want to see her (and Clive's) reaction to everything they encounter.

Basically, I really enjoyed this one and can't recommend it enough.
