Description:

Leena is too young to feel stuck.
Eileen is too old to start over.
Maybe it’s time for The Switch…

Ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, Leena escapes to her grandmother Eileen's house for some overdue rest. Newly single and about to turn eighty, Eileen would like a second chance at love. But her tiny Yorkshire village doesn’t offer many eligible gentlemen… So Leena proposes a solution: a two-month swap. Eileen can live in London and look for love, and Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire.

But with a rabble of unruly OAPs to contend with, as well as the annoyingly perfect – and distractingly handsome – local schoolteacher, Leena learns that switching lives isn’t straightforward. Back in London, Eileen is a huge hit with her new neighbours, and with the online dating scene. But is her perfect match nearer to home than she first thought?

Review:

I picked this one up from my favourite bargain everything store - The Works - for just £2/3 for £5.

This starts with Leena fumbling through a sales pitch at work and her boss demanding she take some much needed time off - two months to be exact - so she can get back to being her usual self. Leena doesn't want time off, she'd rather work but decides to travel up to see her Grandma in her little picturesque Yorkshire village. Grandma Eileen has recently lost her husband to the dance instructor and is starting to feel a little lonely so she has compiled a list of the eligible men in her village - only she can't see herself with any of them. When Leena catches a look at the list, she's equally fascinated and horrified at the pros and cons and comes up with an idea: Why doesn't Eileen head to London and Leena will stay in the village?

This did take me a while to get into at the start but once I did, I was excited to see what both of the women would do in their respective locations. Leena was taking over Eileen's duties in Hamleigh and Eileen was trying to make Leena's London block of flats a bit more welcoming to group activities and get togethers while checking out the dating scene. It was fun.

I enjoyed seeing both women slowly sink into their new surroundings and find their place in their new community and doing what they could to make their mark. I grew to really like them both but Eileen was definitely my favourite of the two.

This isn't my usual read, really, but I did truly enjoy this book. It's a romance but with family drama and a small village community who know everyone else's business.

Amber Jones is in a pickle. And when I say pickle, I mean a world of trouble.

She knew she shouldn't have gone to her ex's New Year's Eve party. And she reeeaally didn't mean to almost burn down his house.

Now she needs a good lawyer, stat. But where to find one?

Ethan Vaughn is a very busy man.

He really shouldn't have agreed to spring Amber Jones out of jail. As the most sought after lawyer in professional football, he should be focused on representing his NFL clients--not an accident-prone, struggling actress.

Now she's remanded on bail, and living in his house.

The woman is a walking talking disaster. And considering his track record, he needs to stay as far away from this one as possible.

Problem is, he's finally met the one he's willing to risk it all for.

Review:

I read the first book in this series last year some time and really enjoyed it, so of course I went and bought the next in the series, it's just taken me a while to get around to reading it.

This starts with Amber in lock-up, waiting for her phone-call, after accidentally setting her ex's mum's kitchen on fire after finding out he was getting engaged to another woman while invited to the party. She rings her best friend, Cam - the main gal in the first book in this series, and she sends Ethan who's a lawyer and close friend but Amber's pseudo enemy. Her bail gets posted but she is given into Ethan's care to supervise her actions until the court case. Amber is determined to give up on romance and love after the disasters she's dated but there's something about Ethan that chips away at her resilience and feelings slowly begin to emerge for both of them.

I forgot how much I like this authors style! I could have happily and greedily read this in one sitting.

Amber was stubborn as a mule but Ethan had a way about him that totally broke down her barriers. I really liked him. Maybe he didn't go about it all in the right way but I could tell from near the start that Ethan had feelings for her (as shown in my Goodreads updates).
I loved how we saw more of Cam and Cal from book one, Wrecking Ball, too. The birth of their child was written with humour and heart and I remembered why I liked their story so much, too.

I am most definitely going to read more of this authors books because they are the style of writing I like and the romance always hits me in the feels. (I'll admit, I did have a little cry towards the end when it all started to look a little bleak).

Description:

Stuart Jenner’s job is high stress, high stakes, and everything he’s strived for. So why, when the apex of his career is within reach, does he stumble? At his doctor’s insistence, he books a privately chartered yacht to sail around the Whitsundays for two weeks of sun, surf, and sex. When his friend-with-benefits bails on him at the last minute, Stuart decides to go alone.

Foster Knight left the rat race behind six years ago, bought a yacht, and now calls the Great Barrier Reef his home. Sailing tourists around tropical waters is all in a day’s work, and he’s never been happier. When his next client arrives alone, the two-week charter will be the most private job he’s ever had.

Foster can see how stressed and exhausted Stuart is, and he promises him extensive rest and relaxation. Stuart slowly realises his original plan for two weeks of sun, surf, and sex might not be lost yet. Confined to a yacht, isolated by aqua-coloured oceans and the sweltering sun, Stuart and Foster are about to find out just how hot the tropics can get.

Review:

I decided to change things up and go for a more recent book this time. I've read quite a few of N.R. Walker's books and enjoy them more often than not, and this one sounded quite good.

This starts with Stuart leaving his stressful role at a big company to go on annual leave for two weeks on a yacht travelling the Whitsundays. The guy he was supposed to be going with pulls out the night before they're set to leave and so he ends up alone but for the captain of the boat. Stuart isn't sure how relaxing it will be on his own but before long on the first day the sun, swimming and the company of Foster have him de-stressing quickly and an attraction begins to flare between them, especially when he realises that Foster is also gay and single.

I was pulled in pretty quickly with this. It was a quick read and their journey through the tropical islands, clear blue seas and white sandy beaches of the Whitsundays sounded amazing.

The romance between them was a slow burn, taking until about half way for things to progress to fully physical but you could see that by then it was starting to get emotional between them, too. They were great for each other in a lot of ways and the end bit where Foster sailed down the coast to find Stuart in Sydney was super cute.

I will, of course, be reading more books by this author in the future.

Description:

For Charli Blake, being seventeen is a tough gig.

She's been branded a troublemaker, her reputation is in tatters and she's stuck in Pipers Cove, a speck of a town on the coast of Tasmania.

Thankfully, it's temporary. Her lifelong dream of travelling the world is just months away from becoming reality. All she has to do is ride out the last few months of high school, which is easier said than done thanks to a trio of mean girls known as The Beautifuls.

When Adam DΓ©carie arrives in town, all the way from New York, life takes an unexpected turn. His arrival sets off a chain of events that alters her life forever, convincing her of one thing. Fate brought him to her.

Review:

This is another long serving Kindle book that must have been on my device for about five years. I do have a tendency to buy/download (freebies) books and forget about them.

This starts with Charli leaving her brothers diner/convenience store to head home in the rain only to be nearly hit by a car she doesn't recognise - one belonging to new arrival Adam. Adam has been drawn to the small Tasmanian town after receiving postcards from his cousin showing beautiful views in the area. They initially clash but both find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other and feelings bloom between the pair. He makes her want things that she'd started to give up on.

I wasn't sure about this to start with. Charli doesn't come across the best initially - she's a stubborn, argumentative teen - but the more we read about her and the things that she's been through in the tiny town we begin to sympathise and see she isn't so bad and is doing the best she can to protect herself from future hurt.
Adam came across as a nice guy from the start but at the same time we never really learned much about him - not for a long time anyway.

I enjoyed the first 25% or so but then it all sort of stayed as it was - we didn't really have any major things happen to throw some drama about and I got a little bored. There was a bit of drama thrown in towards the end that had me intrigued enough to carry on but it didn't full pull me in at any point.

I wasn't keen on how the first part of this series ended, either. Everything is left open. She goes travelling but not with who she was supposed to. Adam is in New York and Charli ends up in Mauritius. She left before school finished... I don't know, maybe I expected her to stick to her guns but unexpected things got thrown at her right at the end and she did need to escape. I'm not sure if I'll continue the series.

Description:

Secrets are spilled, lies are revealed, and dark destinies emerge. She's judged them all - now they'll be the ones to judge her.

Alyssa is no longer seeing the gray area - she's living in it. A destiny she never considered is consuming her. Everything ends, and it ends now - no matter what the outcome.

Review:

I bought this before I'd even finished book 2 because I just knew there would be things left unfinished and I would NEED to know what was going to end up happening.

Alyssa is still undecided between her two men after having the prophecy revealed to her. It pushes her to the edge and she blacks out, waking up in Kane's arms a little while later. The blackouts continue and it seems the prophecy may be coming true - Alyssa is the descendant of Fey gods - and her multitude of powers are slowly breaking free of her control. She needs to learn to control them or she'll be dealing with a war as the different supernatural breeds will start a war to take her out.

I put off reading this - dragging it out for several days longer than necessary considering it's the shortest of the trilogy - as I seem to do every last book of series' I read. And it was probably for the same reasons: I don't want to never read these characters again. (I do know the author has done books for the rest of the guys).

This was quite a fitting end to this trilogy. It all culminates in this one - all the unanswered questions we've gathered from reading the previous books - and we finally get answers as to who's been behind it all. And it surprised me! I did not expect certain people to be involved.

This is a very enthralling series and I can't recommend it enough if you're into paranormal stories.

Description:

Alyssa has spent her entire life foolishly believing things are only laid out in black or white, but now she finds herself stuck in the gray area. The inner battle she faces with her own dark power that she has denied for too long starts to brew all the more fiercely. Kane's coldness breaks her heart even more than it's already broken, but fate's cruel sense of humor forces them to band together despite their torrid conflict.

The biggest problem... There are consequences she didn't know she'd have to face after giving herself to Kane, and she finds herself in pain each and every time she's near him. A pain that leaves her feeling like a puppet.

Hope rests on the shoulders of her enemies, and her allies pile up in all the wrong forms. When tragedy strikes, she's faced with more dark choices to make. Everything gets twisted, and she becomes stuck in the middle of an internal game of tug-of-war. Gage is there, but he's just as much her enemy as a night stalker. How can she trust any of them?

The world is fully of deadly beauties, and deception is their best played game. Alyssa keeps learning the hard way how true this is.

Review:

So, I bought this straight after finishing the first because there were so many unanswered questions left and new mysteries that sprung up after the way the first book ended. I needed to know what was going to happen.

This starts about a month after the last finished with Alyssa's mum having been found. Kane and Alyssa's relationship has come to an abrupt end and now they're avoiding each other - which is painful for both of them since they were very much in love with each other before they found out the truth. Alyssa is determined to find out who took her mum while also dealing with the threat of Castine. She's also started having feelings for two different guys now and is torn between them.

A lot seems to happen in this one. We see her feelings jumping around about Kane after what went down at the end of the last one - she loves him but she shouldn't. I have to admit, I was very much Team Kane. The first guy who comes onto the scene - unless he's a d*ck - is always the one I cheer on. There was almost an element of reverse harem about this, what with all the guys that are interested in Alyssa, but the author kept it as a love triangle instead.

There's also the fact that both Kane and Alyssa are being set up for killing creatures in the local area, trying to turn everyone against them. But so far they've been lucky and had alibis. I was very intrigued as to who would be behind it, and I was. But someone else was helping them and I want to know more.

So I went ahead and bought book 3! Because I need to know what's going to happen in the end with this messed up trio.

Description:

Alyssa Coldwell decides to put her destiny as an immortal witch to the side, so she can take the chance to live like a normal girl amongst regular humans before she too is part of the fey world. She wants a break from magic and all the dangerous drama that comes with it, but life doesn't always let you do as you please.

Magic is supposed to be simple - you're either light or dark. But Alyssa is brutally awakened when she learns that life isn't always so simple. There are gray areas, and there is more to being light than simply saying you are.

But magic isn't her only problem, humans have problems as well. When she meets Kane Ice, she finds herself in a situation she's never been before. She's been sheltered by her overly protective mother, so being with a guy hasn't ever been an easy task. Kane makes it impossible not to try... while she can. Though she knows she'll have to leave him once her body turns immortal, she can't help but fall for him.

What's the problem with a witch loving a human? So, so many things. Her world is too dangerous, and her attempt to take a break from it fails miserably when her mother is taken captive. With danger always around her, she knows Kane will never be safe. But it's too hard to let him go.

Kane's not so fragile though, and he refuses to lose the only girl he's ever really cared for. Secrets are a part of Alyssa's life, but she's not the only one with a locked vault full of unspoken truths. When the secrets come out, Alyssa loses all her faith, her will, and her hope.
The deadliest things in life are often the most beautiful... until they strike.

Review:

I've had this book for several years now - and to be honest I think the cover put me off. I know I shouldn't judge books based on their covers, but unfortunately I do sometimes.

So this starts with Alyssa moving to a small town away from her Coven and her well known, respected/feared mum to live amongst humans for a while before she becomes immortal. On her first day she meets Kane Ice, a mystery guy who walks her home to make sure she doesn't become a victim of whatever has been killing young women in the area. They bump into each other often and things become romantic between the pair but Alyssa is wary of falling for a human, especially when her mum goes missing and dark creatures keep popping up in her small town and trying to hurt Alyssa.

I wasn't entirely sure where this book was going to go. I was encouraging the romance between Kane and Alyssa but there was definitely something a little different about Kane. Some of the things that happened or were said just made me think he wasn't entirely human. Things didn't add up and I was really waiting for the moment when we'd find out just what he was. It did take me by surprise in a way.

It does feel like this ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. We have several things that are unanswered and mysteries that got even more intriguing. I was really hoping for the romance to prevail but things took an unexpected turn with that and I just HAVE TO READ BOOK 2! ASAP!

Sailor Bishop has only one goal for his future – to create a successful landscaping business. No distractions allowed. Then he comes face-to-face and lips-to-lips with a woman who blushes like an innocent… and kisses like pure sin.

Ísa Rain craves a man who will cherish her, aches to create a loving family of her own. Trading steamy kisses with a hot gardener in a parking lot? Not the way to true love. Then a deal with the devil (aka her CEO-mother) makes Ísa a corporate VP for the summer. Her main task? Working closely with a certain hot gardener.

And Sailor Bishop has wickedness on his mind.

As Ísa starts to fall for a man who makes her want to throttle and pounce on him at the same time, she knows she has to choose – play it safe and steady, or risk all her dreams and hope Sailor doesn’t destroy her heart.

Review:

I picked this up as a freebie last year some time after using the Chapters interactive story app and reading the story that way.

This starts with a prologue. We see a young - 16, I think - Sailor at a college party where he becomes entranced by a college aged redhead who gets humiliated in front of the entire party. Then we jump forward several years and Ísa - the redhead - is now a teacher and can't help but admire the shirtless gardener doing the school grounds. They bump into each other outside and Ísa, in a moment of madness, kisses him but there is something about him that seems familiar and she runs away, humiliated. Only the gardener isn't willing to let the fiery red head get away.

I remembered quite a lot of this considering it has to have been over a year since I read it on the Chapters app. I really liked Sailor, he's this great guy who is determined to catch the girl who escaped him years ago while also building his business into something amazing. Ísa is the heir to a fortune but is unwilling to take money from either of her parents companies and is determined to make it on her own while also helping out her various younger siblings.

Their romance was equal parts hot and sweet. They were a little like rabbits with the amount of sex they had but you could see they were really starting to fall for each other with the little things they said and did. They were actually pretty perfect for each - when Ísa got over the fact that he was younger than her, anyway.

I'm intrigued by Nayna and Raj's romance since we keep seeing bits of their relationship throughout this one. I would love to read their journey and possibly the rest of Sailor's brothers stories, too.

Description:

Leave it to Maryah Woodsen to break the one rule that will screw up eternity: Never erase your memories.

Before entering this life, Maryah did the unthinkable—she erased. Now, at seventeen years old, she’s clueless that her new adoptive family has known her for centuries, that they are perpetually reincarnated souls, and that they have supernatural abilities. Oh, and she's supposed to love (not despise) Nathan, the green-eyed daredevil who saved her life.

Nathan is convinced his family’s plan to spark Maryah's memory is hopeless, but his love for her is undying. After spending (and remembering) so many lifetimes together, being around an empty version of his soulmate is heart shattering. He hates acting like a stalker, but has no choice because the evil outcast who murdered Maryah in their last lifetime is still after her.

While Maryah’s hunter inches closer, she and Nathan make assumptions and hide secrets that rip them further apart. Maryah has to believe in the magic within her, Nathan must have faith in the power of their love, and both need to grasp onto the truth before they lose each other forever—and discover just how lonely eternity can be.

Review:

This is the oldest Kindle book left on my device, coming from 2015.

This starts with Maryah - pronounced Mariah - sulking after an argument with her parents and is hanging out in her family's boat when her twin brother tempts her back inside. Only she hears a scream and running up to the house she finds her family being slaughtered. The attacker leaves her for dead, too, but she somehow survives and ends up flying out to stay with her godmother in Sedona. The family is a little odd, managing to pull of amazing feats etc.

I struggled from the start with this. It didn't have the smooth style I'm used to and was taking way too long for something to happen after that initial attack. It was boring me.

I can't really go into much detail because I didn't get far into the book but this was not for me.

Rise - The redemption story of a rock star going straight(er) through the love of a good(ish) woman.

Acclaimed literary biographer Elizabeth Winston writes about long-dead heroes. So bad-boy rock icon Zander Freedman couldn’t possibly tempt her to write his memoir. Except the man is a mass of fascinating contradictions–manipulative, honest, gifted, charismatic and morally ambiguous. In short, everything she seeks in a biography subject. When in her life will she get another chance to work with a living legend? But saying yes to one temptation soon leads to another. Suddenly she’s having heated fantasies about her subject, fantasies this blue-eyed devil is only too willing to stoke. She thought self-control was in her DNA; after all, she grew up a minister’s daughter. She thought wrong.

Rock star Zander Freedman has been an outlier–many would say an outcast–for most of his life. But there’s no disaster he can’t overcome, from the breakup of his band to the inevitable damage to his reputation. His Resurrection Tour is shaping up to be his greatest triumph–if his golden voice holds out. Contracting a respected biographer is simply about creating more buzz. Elizabeth’s integrity is the key to consolidating his legacy as one of rock’s greats. All the damn woman has to do is write down what he tells her. Not force him to think. Or encourage the good guy struggling to get out. And certainly not make him fall in love for the first time in his life. Turns out he is scared of something: being known.

Review:

This one is another oldie on my Kindle, being there since 2017 when I picked it up as a freebie at Amazon.

It starts with Zander trying to get a prescription for steroids - for his vocal chords - renewed before he heads out on stage for the last part of his American leg of his world tour. After a decade on the scene, he wants someone to write his memoir and contacts Elizabeth Winston - who has written several memoirs that he's enjoyed - who reluctantly agrees to it after meeting him and adding a "no-fire" clause into her contract. Zander expects her to rehash old stories already printed but Elizabeth is determined to get to the real Zander. Equally annoyed and fascinated by the fiery redhead, he can't help but feel a connection to her.

This is a book that took me a while and it wasn't because I wasn't into it. I was quickly pulled into this - at the start in a where is this going to go way - but it quickly became more than that. I was intrigued by these characters. We see things from more than just our main characters POV's, which was interesting.

I feel like this is a story of redemption. Zander was the typical rock star when he was younger and made several mistakes before things ended badly with the original lineup of his band, Rage. He's decided to make a comeback by finding a new lineup and doing a world tour and wants someone to write his memoir. He's on his third biographer with Elizabeth and she slowly works her way under his skin. He actually went from being someone I wasn't sure about to someone I really liked. He allowed himself to be vulnerable around her and he became a nicer guy.

There romance was slow going but you could see it was going to be inevitable. There was a connection that grew slowly and by the time they decided to do something about it, I was happy for them. Of course, romances always have an issue in them for the drama value and this one actually had several. By that time, I'd become emotionally invested in these two and read through my tears. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.

I am intrigued enough by the rest of the band and Dimity - I still have no idea how to pronounce that name - to finish this series at some point in the future.

At war with themselves and each other, Conall and Thea’s journey to Scotland forces them to face a heartrending choice between love and betrayal.

Review:

I bought this last year as I'm a big fan of Samantha Young's books.

This starts with Thea in Hungary - at least, I think it's Hungary, she travels around Europe a lot in this book - and helping to save a shopkeeper who is being held up at gunpoint. In doing so, she reveals her powers to the attacker which sends him fleeing in fright and Thea knows it will send a big signal to the man who's been chasing her for the last six years on her whereabouts. We then jump to Scotland where Conall is about to accept a mating bond with an American pack so they can become allies but they're interrupted by an older man wanting Conall to track down Thea in Europe and bring her back to him, stating that Thea's blood will cure Conall's ill sister.

Werewolves are not my favourite supe to read about. I'm more a vampire girl, myself. But as this was by Sam Young and as a fan, I thought I'd give this a go.

I did like this, we got taken on a wild road trip across Europe meeting a variety of characters and learning about the creation of vampires, werewolves and about the fae.

I liked that Thea was this literal kick-arse unknown supernatural for a lot of the book. She had so many amazing abilities and managed to subdue almost every enemy without help. Conall was a typical Alpha, protective, strong and didn't take no crap from anyone. He was equally as deadly as Thea.

The final showdown between Thea and her tormentor was quite...exciting, as in I'm so glad she had the chance and that she pulled it off. He really wasn't a nice guy and I cheered when Thea came out on top. I'm glad she finally got to live in peace.

I may continue this series in the future as I've seen that they don't all revolve around werewolves.
