Description:

As the daughter of a successful Major League pitcher, Charlie Hastings has baseball in her blood. Unfortunately, being the only girl on her high school baseball team, Charlie has always been just one of the guys.

When her best friend, and secret love of her life, asks another girl to the prom, Charlie is devastated. She’s tired of being overlooked by boys because she’s not like other girls. Suffering a massive identity crisis, she decides to hang up her cleats and finally learn how to be a girl.

But with only two weeks until the state championships, the Roosevelt High Ravens can’t afford to lose their star catcher. Team captain Jace King makes her a deal: Don’t quit the team, and he’ll help her become the girl she’s so desperate to be. After all, he’s got four sisters, one of whom happens to be a cheerleader. He knows a thing or two about girls. (And if he can win her heart in the process, all the better.)

Review:

Got this from the KU Library.

I binge read this authors books a few years ago now and made it a personal challenge to read everything she's ever written but when I fell out of my Young Adult obsession, I gave up on it. But now that I'm enjoying them again, I've picked up this book and hope I like this as much as I used to like this authors work.

So this starts with Charlie determined to tell her best friend and crush, Eric, that she likes him and ask him to senior prom only for him to tell her he's already going with someone else and he didn't think Charlie was into dresses and dances - making her feel very tomboy and unattractive. She tries to quit her baseball team in the hopes she can somehow come across as being more girly but the team captain, Jace, tells her she'll regret not finishing the season and tells her he'll enlist his twin sister in helping her find the right clothes and makeup to suit her - all while Jace is trying to make Charlie fall for him.

I enjoyed this. I like to have a bit of cute to mix in with all the steamy stuff I normally read and this was perfect. Super cute clean teen romance. I was smiling like an idiot for most of it with just how sweet a couple these two are. It's a slow build up with touches and glances and Oh my God, I think he likes me's. Cuteness overload.

I loved Charlie's dad. I feel he deserves a mention. He's the overprotective dad but in a fun way; she has a slit in her prom dress up to mid-thigh? Her dad's response: That's fine, we can duct tape it. They have a great relationship and are so close.

As for the rest of the team - though we don't get to know all of them - they're really likeable with their teasing and ribbing of each other. I'd be interested to read more of them and more of this authors books in the future.

I used to hunt witches. Now I live with one.

To further complicate things, my past as a supernatural bounty hunter doesn’t exactly make me popular in these new circles I’m running in.

Shocker, I know.

Someone wants me dead.

Unfortunately for them, I’m pretty good at keeping myself alive. Not that it stops Ronan from being an alphahole.
He wants me to stay in Nathalie’s apartment and be safe while he handles the threat, all while holding Bree’s future over my head.

Not gonna happen.

To say I’m fucked is an understatement. But I’ve been in worse spots before.

Lucifer may be gone, but the corruption of magic isn’t. I have enemies everywhere.

And this time, they’re going to know what it means to burn.

Some things are worse than the devil.
To save Bree, I’ll become one of them.

Review:

Got this from the KU Library.

This starts from where the last left off with Ronan having Piper's sister Bree and Piper wanting her back. He tells her he's keeping Bree safe and that all she has to do is have the second blood exchange and he'll tell Piper how to save her. Only things don't go as planned as Piper ends up back in the Underworld - only now it's run by The Morrigan/Morgana Le Fay - and she ends up her prisoner.

I liked the interaction between Piper and Ronan. The way their relationship is written. The touches that distract, the timbre of his voice that seduces. It's enticing to read. It's not all about the full on sexual attraction with this, it's written to captivate and pull you into their complicated world. I like that.

As for the rest of the story line? Well strangely, I didn't really feel a lot happened in this one compared to the previous book but at the same time I wasn't bothered at all. I think it's just how the book is written. It dragged me in and kept me interested from start to finish. And then that ending... What a way to just cut the story off. It is a bit of a cliffhanger - fair warning.

It has me intrigued enough to want to read the next book in this series when it gets released.

A werewolf killer. A paranormal murder. How many times can Emma Bellamy cheat death?

I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next.

Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up twelve hours later in the morgue – and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

Werewolves are disappearing right, left and centre.

A mysterious vampire seems intent on following me everywhere I go.

And I have to solve my own vicious killing. Preferably before death comes for me again.

Review:

Got this from KU.

This starts with Emma heading to the Police's Academy building to learn where she will be placed next before graduating and becoming a Detective. Only instead of heading to the Cyber Crime team like she expects, she's sent to the Supe Squad - which everyone sees as being a punishment, including Emma. Nevertheless she heads outside to meet her mentor and is driven through London to meet the vampires and the werewolves. Later that same night Emma heads out after receiving a text from her mentor, only to find herself attacked and left to die - only Emma wakes up twelve hours later with no signs of trauma, only a thirst to find out who killed her.

I did enjoy this but not for the mystery. It was more for the Lord Horvath and Emma thing than finding out what had happened to the werewolves, her mentor and her. And in regards to her death...I was a bit disappointed by her killer and their reasoning for it. That person was definitely a little lot deranged. As for the werewolf and mentor thing, well, I was a little surprised though looking back at the start of the book now it all makes much more sense.

Going back to the thing that's brewing between Emma and a certain vampire Lord... I did enjoy that. Emma had a few shivers and sparks when they touched and he's intrigued by what she is and just her in general. She's braver than any other human he's met and he likes that.

So yeah, I went and downloaded book 2...

Description:

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Review:

I've had my eye on this series since I saw they were making it into a movie so when my friend's daughter was giving her paperback copies of the series to our work's charity book sale, I decided to grab them to read.

It starts with Ethan getting ready for his first day at school after suffering very real dreams involving a girl he's never met before and a song that taunts him. Heading to school he hears rumours of a new girl in town, the niece of the towns oddball resident. It isn't long before Ethan meets the girl and recognises her from the dreams he's been having and he can't help but want to get to know her. Only things aren't as straight forward as they seem with Lena.

It took me a long time to get into this - well past the 125 pages mark. I'll be honest, I was ready to give up on this book at various points up to that point because it was dragging it out way too much in my opinion. Nevertheless, I did eventually get into it but it was still so slow going. Nope. I lied. It started to get good; we had a magic house and a magic family and a forbidden romance but the pacing was crap. I just completely lost interest. If it had been half the size length wise, I may have stuck it out (Note: I'd have already finished it by now) because after almost 6 weeks of reading I should have finished it by now!

I did not gel with this one at all. We had so much unnecessary information and repeated information... I just couldn't do it anymore. There are books out there I'd enjoy a lot more that I could be reading right now. This book and the rest of the series can go back and be in my works charity book sale.

Description:

Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.

Review:

I got this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It's been a long time since I last read a Young Adult book and when I saw this on Netgalley, I had to request it - because Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda/Love, Simon! - and I honestly wasn't expecting to be approved, so YAY! Thank you Penguin Random House for this.

This starts with Kate and her best friend Anderson saying goodbye to their mutual summer crush, Matt, at their summer camp. Only Matt turns up at their school as a new student and they immediately try and get in classes with him but only Andy is successful though they all have the school play together. When all three get major parts in it, they see it as a way to get close to Matt but the friends decide to not let jealousy get in the way of their friendship but find out it's a lot harder putting that into practise.

I could have happily read this in one sitting last night, I was that into it. I put it down around midnight and picked it up first thing this morning so I could figure out how it was going to go (though I had a feeling about who was going to end up with who - and I was right!)

I liked the dynamics between Kate and her group and even her brother, Ryan. They were so close knit and I liked their outlook on school and boys and theatre. They made me smile a lot.

Then there was Noah - Ryan's friend and someone she used to be close to. After breaking his wrist and being out of Baseball for the season Noah is now in the Drama class and must take part in the play, too, and asks Kate to help him with singing lessons that actually get him a part in the play. I really liked Noah. He's a bit crazy but he grew on me a lot.

I'm glad these two friends found happiness and love.

Description:

Has Fate given her a second chance?

'Zoe' is having a very bad day. As if getting trapped in a faulty elevator wasn't bad enough, losing her memory has made it much worse. If there's one piece of luck, it's that the paramedic on the scene, Noah, is both kind and a handsome distraction...

Now a completely blank canvas, with the help of Noah, 'Zoe' is excited to fill her world with colour, creativity and sweet and spicy food. She just knows from the tips of her toes, right to her fleek brows, that these things were all part of her make-up.

But when her identity is traced, the life 'Zoe' was living before the accident bears no resemblance to that of the person she's convinced she is. What happened to make her world so narrow and colourless?

And now she has the chance to start over, is it time to let the real Zoe out?

Review:

I got this from Netgalley and Headline Eternal books in exchange for an honest review.

This starts with a woman in a lift accident being rescued by the emergency services, only the woman has no recollection of her name or a lot of things about herself due to a bump on the head. She's diagnosed with amnesia and the police take her fingerprints and photo in the hopes it will match a missing persons report or come up on the South African drivers database. The woman decides her name is "Zoe" until her memories come back and decided to try and find things out about herself with the help of Noah, the paramedic who kept her calm and safe as she was rescued.

I don't know about this one.

I struggled a little to get through the first 60% or so with Zoe trying to relearn things about herself and then finding out who she really was before the accident. I did feel rather bad for Zoe for a while as she rediscovered what her life had been like for the past seven years at her job and just her life in general.

I'm a romance reader and that bit of this story was slowly being nurtured in the background but it only really started to kick in around the half way mark when Noah came back into the equation again. There were some fun scenes between those two in that second half including a water park and a screamo/death metal rave-slash-gig.

There was the author's usual quirky comedy scenes included too, one of which involved suspected serial killers luring Zoe and Noah to their home during a storm. It was crazy but funny at the same time.

That end bit with the scene from the past was really cute and just sort of wrapped it up nicely.

I did enjoy this but the romance just took too long to start for me, unfortunately.

He was someone who belonged in my wildest fantasies instead of a rest stop in the middle of Nebraska.

A sexy, cocky, Australian named Chance was the last person I expected to run into on my cross-country drive.

When my car broke down, we made a deal. Next thing I knew, we were traveling together, spending sexually-tense nights in hotels and taking unplanned detours.

My ordinary road trip turned into the adventure of a lifetime. It was all fun and games until things got intense.

I wanted him, but Chance wouldn’t make a move. I thought he wanted me too, but something was holding him back.

I wasn’t supposed to fall for the cocky bastard, especially when I knew we’d be going our separate ways.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Review:

Got this from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

It starts with Aubrey going cross country for her new job after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. She's at a rest stop when she bumps into Chance who flirts with her and teases her a little before it becomes clear that his bike has gone kaput and since they're both heading in the same direction, they decide to head out together although Aubrey is reluctant at the start. Before long an attraction sparks to life and they experience some really beautiful things together.

It's told in both of their POV's but Aubrey gets the first half and Chance gets the second so you get to see both lots of emotions and how much they cared about what they'd done together and how close they'd gotten. They had a lot of fun together and you could see their relationship grow on every page so his sudden departure from her life was unexpected and then the "two years later" appeared on the next scroll of my Kindle and I did roll my eyes a little.

That was when we got Chance's POV and I began to understand why he'd been like he had been with her - flirty but held himself back at times - but why he didn't just tell her what had happened I'll never know. Weirdly though, I was cheering him on. I wanted him to win Aubrey back. It was rather touch and go for a while in that second half and I was starting to get a little emotional on Chance's behalf when it wasn't entirely clear that Aubrey was going to choose him.

One quote seemed right for this second chance romance:
"My second Chance."

I think one of my favourite bits of this entire book was the goat. From the start when they almost ran him over, he's been the book's comedy element. And I agree with Chance; for a supposed blind goat, he certainly seems to know where people are standing. I actually started to fall in love with the little thing myself in all its quirkiness.

I've read a few collaborations between these two authors and enjoyed them and I will certainly be reading more of them in the future.

Description:

For a decade, I’ve hated the supernaturals who owned my world.

I hunted them.
I killed them.

And now, in the most grand twist of fate—I am bonded to one of them.

Oh, the irony.

Being a supernatural bounty hunter isn’t exactly a popular job. But after the magic wars, there aren’t many things a human can do that will put food on the table.

Thankfully anything my right hook can’t handle, my guns can.

Or so I thought.

When a demon summoning runs awry, the being that comes into this world changes everything.

I’m not sure if he’s truly a demon or a god, but one thing I do know is that he’s after me. I’d like to see him try.

I’ve got a promise to fulfill, and I’m not backing down.

The only way out of this is his death or mine, and I’ll do anything to survive.

Even if that means making a deal with the devil.

Review:

Got this from the KU Library.

This starts with Piper hunting down her bounty at a club and showing how handy she is with a gun as she fights off her bounties allies before heading to her boss to drop the guy off. She's then given her next assignment: a coven of witches are going to summon a demon and need to be stopped. Only someone in the coven catches her off guard and the ritual goes ahead, the demon gets summoned and she finds herself at the centre of its focus as well as at the bottom of her boss' sh*t list for not stopping the summoning in the first place. Now Piper must figure out how to save herself from both things.

This was a pretty quick easy read for me. I was drawn in from the first page when we saw how kick arse Piper was. She handled herself well against the group of magic beings and I do love reading about women who can handle themselves in my UF books. There was also the mystery of just what Piper was, sure she was human but not fully.

I did enjoy her connection with Ronan, though they honestly don't spend that much time together in this book. It was through dreams and those few interactions near the start but it was pretty powerful.

There was also Nathalie - who's also a bit of a mystery since she doesn't know what sort of magic she has - who managed to get under Piper's skin and become her friend.

Add in that ending involving Lucifer himself and I must confess that I am intrigued where this story is going to end up going. I will definitely be reading more of this series in the future.

I see dead people.
No, not like that movie.

I’m a coroner, and yes it's the kiss of death on my dating life. When men find out what I do, I'm lucky to hear “it was nice meeting you.”

Until I almost accidentally kill Blake Hale with my car.
Instead of being freaked out by me, he’s intrigued.
No matter how much I try to scare him off, he keeps coming back for more.
And for a follow-the-rules guy, he’s breaking them all… for me.

We couldn’t be more different.
He’s all goodness and light, with a brain that’s even sexier than his six pack.
I’m danger in a pretty package, and no amount of knocking on wood is going to make the happily ever after he’s promising come true. But…

With each word we exchange, my resolve weakens.
With each heated look, he gets further into my soul.
With every kiss, he consumes me by accepting me just as I am.

I deal in death all day. He sells life… insurance. What could possibly go wrong when I start believing in Mr. Right?

Review:

Got this from the KU Library.

This starts with Zoey heading to a crime scene to see her latest body - who's keeled over into his scrambled eggs - and taking photos of the scene before heading back to the morgue where she ends up in a car accident with Blake - a life insurance...guy/manager? They need to sort out the insurance for the cars and trade details for later on but Blake can't help but be drawn to the pretty mortician and seeks her out.

I liked Blake. I definitely feel like I should mention him first. From that first meeting with Zoey he was drawn to her and wasn't letting anything get in his way - not the rumours and stupid nicknames, not Zoey, herself, pushing him away. His determination to claim her as his.
Zoey was great too, but I did feel like she just let everyone walk all over her in regards to her nicknames and treating her like she was cursed and a bad omen. I'm glad that with Blake's encouragement that she started to stand up for herself and grew into herself more. It was cute to read.

I did like this but it did feel long at times and I skipped paragraphs here and there.

It was the mystery of her DB's (Dead Bodies) cause of death that kept me reading really. I thought I knew who was behind it, like Zoey and Blake, but it was only right at the end that we actually see who it was behind it all and it surprised me a little. It was cleverly thought out, leading you one way and then the other.

I wouldn't mind reading more books by this author in the future.

Book vs. Film Poll: The DUFF

The Duff book movie differences

I think it's about time I did another book vs film poll and this time it's The DUFF - The Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger. I read this a few years ago now and as a bigger girl myself, I felt for Bianca and was intrigued how things would turn out with the kinda arsehole Wesley.

I really enjoyed the book but then when I found out they'd made a film, too, I had to buy it to see if it was as good. I have a bit of a weakness in regards to Amell brothers so I was definitely going to watch it. Anyway, I enjoyed the film, too, but I definitely think they changed a few things around because I think Bianca spent a lot of time in bed with Wesley in the book and they couldn't really do that in the film, could they?

In my opinion they're both as good as each other but what did you think if you've watched/read them? Did you enjoy one more than the other?

Which do you think is the best version of The D.U.F.F?

Nikolai
My rules when it comes to my job in personal protection are pretty simple:

1. Protect the client’s life, not their feelings.
2. Don’t put hands on a client unless you’re getting them out of harm’s way.
3. For God’s sake, don’t do something stupid like fall in love.

Twenty-four hours after meeting Jude Archer, rules 1 and 2 are already out the window.

Thankfully there’s no chance of falling for the callous businessman who cares more about his next deal than he does his own safety.

Jude may have managed to make fools of all the guys his wealthy boss and rumored lover has hired to watch him, but he’s playing in the big leagues now. The son of a bitch might not value his life, but I’m pretty fond of mine.

Time to teach the clueless Jude Archer a few hard lessons…

Jude
My rules for success aren’t for everyone, but they should be.

1. Work hard.
2. When you’re on the verge of giving up, work harder. Life owes you nothing. You have to take what you want.
3. For God’s sake, don’t do something stupid like get distracted by feelings.

With just weeks between me and the closing of the deal that will give me everything I want, I don’t have time to worry about a supposed stalker who hasn’t had the balls to do anything more than send a few threatening letters to my wealthy boss.

Sure, I sent a few so-called bodyguards packing. Even if I thought I was in serious danger, I can’t have someone watching me 24/7. My life works the way it does for a reason and no one, not even the gorgeous Russian ex-soldier who thinks he can scare me into submission, is going to change that.

Nikolai Falkov thinks he has something to teach me? Yeah, good luck with that.

Review:

Got this from the KU LIbrary.

This starts with Nikolai heading in to see his boss who talks about a client that has managed to shake off every other security detail he's had and so he wants to send in the big guns - Nikolai himself. Nikolai sticks to Jude like glue, slowly getting to know the man and an attraction flares between them but Nikolai tries to hold himself back due to the rules he holds himself by. Jude is desperate to prove himself worthy of his job and the role that he will soon inherit so spends hours at work, ignoring everything else in his life including food and people. Then Nikolai shows up at his office and suddenly his rigid control is slipping as the man sneaks under his defences.

I'll be honest, the cover pulled me in with this one. I'd seen it all over Amazon - almost like it was stalking me! - before I gave in and downloaded it from the KU Library.

The romance between the two men did seem to come a little out of nowhere after that initial burst of attraction but they also had some really deep and thoughtful conversations and interactions with each other that just screamed "perfect match". They grew to understand each other and know what the other wanted/needed and it was nice to read. They complimented each other and it was nice to see Jude begin to relax around his new lover.

One issue I had with this book was the stalker. Apart from a few letters we see at the start we don't have any other things arrive in all the time that Nik is protecting Jude and then BAM - he's at the hospital, managing to find them in a stairwell, holding a gun on them.

I will probably read more of this authors book in the future.

When Roger, the alpha of the North American pack, shows up at my door with the news that a demon has made it to the Underworld with knowledge of me, some hard decisions have to be made.

Do I stay above ground, with all my magical friends, and wait for the battle to come to me? Or do I seek the demon out, and pluck the threat out by the root?

I don’t want my friends to die on my behalf. I could never life with myself. But if I venture into the Underworld, it’ll be the most perilous journey of my life.

This time, it isn’t just my life hanging in the balance, it is my eternity.

Review:

This carries on from the last with Reagan now in danger of being noticed by her father if the demon tells anyone in the Underworld about her so she she hatches a plan to go down there to kill the demon before it can get to Lucifer. Darius decides to tag along but only if she agrees to bond with him.

I wasn't as into this as the previous two. The trip into the Underworld/Hell wasn't as captivating as the previous two books' investigations/cases that Reagan had to deal with. Yes, the world that the author had created was brilliant in its ever-shifting landscapes, circus like areas, dragons patrolling and warring factions but it still didn't have that intrigue that I'd enjoyed in the previous two books.

I even missed seeing Callie and Dizzy, and sometimes they're a bit annoying. They did make an appearance at the start and the end but the middle chunk - which had to be about 80% of the book - they were missing.

The journey that Reagan and Darius have been on in this series has been a trip. It started out as a fascination with her scent and wondering exactly what she was, to working together while an attraction flared between them to falling in love and bonding to each other. Now that bit of this series, I have enjoyed.

I have enjoyed the beginning trilogy of this series and will be reading more of it and the author's other books at some point in the future.

Description:

It is a common truth in my life that when it rains, it pours.

The killings that once plagued New Orleans are cropping up again in Seattle. The local office is stumped. I’m called out to lend a fresh set of eyes, and my unique magical touch.

It’s only when I get there that I realize the Seattle office isn’t stumped at all.

They’re being silenced by the Mages’ Guild, a corrupt magical institution that doesn't want word to get out of what is plaguing the city. Worse, news of my magic might’ve slipped down to the underworld, hitting the ears of some extremely powerful demons.

What I thought was a routine murder investigation turns into a fight for my life. With the help of Darius, my stalker elder vampire, and my dual-mage side kicks, I somehow have to dodge the Guild in order to stop one of the most powerful demons I’ve ever encountered. If I don’t? It’ll escape back down below with proof of what I really am.

My life hangs in the balance, and this time, I can't see a way out.

Review:

Got this from the KU Library.

This picks up not long after the events of the last one. With the papers from Darius making her legal to work at the MLE, she is now a normal member of the team instead of a bounty hunter. What she didn't expect was to be bored with the job and has been causing chaos in the office just for something to do. When the latest case causes yet another mark against her name, she quits, but is contacted by another office to come and help them solve the issue of demon summonings that are sacrificing people and causing panic in the area. Reagan just doesn't realise it's all a set up to lure her there.

I am getting very into this initial trilogy of the Demon Days, Vampire Nights series. All the things I mentioned enjoying in the last review still stand. Reagan and Darius' thing has evolved quite a bit in this one, which I was rather pleased about. Dizzy and Callie, the mages, are still adding a comedy factor during some of the serious scenes and definitely during the non-serious ones. And Reagan's personal neighbourhood watch crew - the shifty characters that are continually roaming her street - are still finding out interesting things to inform her about.

I've become a fan of this author because she writes characters that you can't help but like and interesting plot lines. I think she's going to be an author that I have to try and read all of her books just to see if it's all brilliant.

I've already started book 3 to how this trilogy is going to end. I have so many questions that need answering!
