Description:

Growing up, Ramsey Stewart branded my soul in ways time could never heal.

At twelve, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
At thirteen, he gave me my first kiss.
By sixteen, we’d fallen in love, planned a future together, and had our eyes set on the horizon.

Love never fails, right?
But for Ramsey, it did.
Love failed him.
I failed him.
The entire world failed him.

At seventeen, Ramsey was convicted of killing the boy who assaulted me.

Move on, he wrote in his first and only letter from prison.
Start a new life, he urged.
I don’t love you anymore, he lied.

There was no such thing as giving up on Ramsey. Love may have been our curse, but he was mine—then, now, and forever.

So here I am, twelve long years later, waiting for a man I don't even know to emerge from between the chain link gates.

Review:

I've never read a book by this author before but seeing the number of reviews and high book rating I thought I'd give this a go.

This starts with Ramsey leaving prison after serving a twelve year sentence to be greeted by his first love Thea - who he went to prison for protecting. Then we go back 18? years to when Ramsey and Thea met as children and see how they grew to be at the prison.

I wasn't sure how this was going to play out. I was hoping for hearts and flowers and lots of aww moments. That never really happened, though. Thea may have waited twelve years for Ramsey to get out of prison but in all that time Ramsey has never allowed her to visit him believing she should have moved on from him and found love with someone else, done all the things they dreamed of together.

It was rather emotional at times, especially when we got to see what was going on in Ramsey's head. He didn't think he deserved to have Thea anymore and was trying his best to push her away even though she was all he really wanted in the world. Luckily Thea was determined to make him hers again and had this amazing attitude where she took all his insults and silences and turned them back on him or acted like he hadn't just ripped out her heart and Ramsey had no idea what to do with that until they had a breakthrough.

There was a bit of a grenade thrown in the book about 75% that blew everything up in the air and I can totally see things from both sides. Ramsey had tough decisions to make and I'm not sure I wouldn't have done the same.

I would be interested to read more books by this author.
