Tessa Ever After - Brighton Walsh

Book: Tessa Ever After

Series: Reluctant Hearts, #2
Genre: Contemporary, Romance
Format: Kindle e-Book

Description:

No one's off-limits for this playboy...except his best friend's little sister.

Tessa Maxwell yearns to find the kind of love movies are made about. For four years, she's been struggling as a single mom, but she hasn't given up on the idea of giving her daughter the family she deserves. Or finding the one guy who can commit to them both.

Jason Montgomery can't commit to a side of the bed, let alone a woman. Trapped by burdens he wants no part of, the last thing he needs is the obligation of a built-in family. But his best friend's little sister is proving too hard to resist.

Jason's the very definition of trouble, but Tessa can't get him out of her mind...or her bed.And every day she spends by his side only serves to keep her from the one thing she wants more than anything--a happily ever after.

Review:

This one starts with Tessa late to pick up her daughter from day care as she struggles to adjust to life since her older brother, Cade, moved away and left her alone with everything. Cade used to be babysitter, chef, chauffeur, DIY-er and many other things that made Tessa's life much easier and she's struggling to get herself in gear. She's also online dating, trying to find the older guy who'll be there and treat her right...when maybe the guy she really wants is a little closer to home.
In walks her brothers best friend, Jason, who Cade has tasked with keeping an eye on her. Jason's view of Tessa has slowly been changing from "best friends little sister" to gorgeous woman and mum and after some warnings from Cade and encouragement from their joint friend Adam, he decides to pursue Tessa.

First things first, I feel like I need to let you know that I have a big weakness for super cute children in my romances and Haley is certainly that. There were some really cute scenes with her and Tessa and Jason. She was super cuteness personified.

I did like their relationship. It was cute how it progressed and I'm glad they stuck with each other despite the obstacles that popped up here and there. And of course there was a misunderstanding that caused a slight rift but luckily they got around it and became a very cute little family unit.

Some of the secondary characters like Adam and Paige grew on me in this. We got to know Paige more than Adam but she seems to need to find that special someone and I think sparks may be flying between her and Adam in the next one. I'm not sure if I'll read it though.

I think I missed some of the angst that can happen in the romances I like with this. It was a little too nice. I like the bad boy type to be full of tattoos and dirty mouthed so they can rile their love interest up enough for her to answer back and sparks to fly.

By Degrees - Elle Casey

Book: By Degrees
Author: Elle Casey

Format: Kindle e-Book
Publication Date: 4th August 2013

My Rating: πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•
Date Finished: 25th July 2020

Description:

Celebrities all suffer from the same disease. I call it the create-your-own-reality disease. Most of them start out normal, like you and me, but somewhere along the way they lose sight of up and down, left and right, and then eventually right and wrong. It's my job to fix that.

Who hires me, Scarlett Barnes, otherwise known as ‘The Normalizer’? Agents usually. Producers sometimes. They know they can trust me to be professional, discreet, and above all, not personally involved with my clients. I come in, I take over their lives, and I get them back on track. Help them remember what it's like to be an average Joe.

My latest job acquisition? His friends call him Tear-It-Up Kilgour, but I just call him Tarin - lead singer and guitarist for the band By Degrees. I have thirty days to get his butt back on planet earth before he loses his record deal, his movie contract, and possibly even his life. I've never failed so far, and I don't plan on failing this time either, even if Tarin has other ideas.

Review:

I like Elle Casey's books. I think this is something like my sixth book.

This one follows Scarlett, a woman who works with celebrities who are out of control, likely to die from an overdose or get arrested for some crime they committed. She tells them the hard truth and makes everyone close to them get in on the staged intervention. Everyone who could make them relapse is blocked from their life.
In comes her newest client, Tarin, a musician who reminds her of her first love, Austin,  whose death made her do the job she does now. He's stubborn and thinks he deserves for his life to fall apart after something in his past but Scarlett is determined to turn his life around but as she gets to know him she can't help but begin to have feelings for him.

I enjoyed this. I've read a few books based on celebrities recently and I saw in a few of those how fame can change a person. With a few harsh home truths from Scarlett and a few unhinged fans along the way, Tarin finally begins on the path back to normalcy, giving up drugs, alcohol and people who were enablers. It takes a while to see a nicer side of Tarin but I quickly grew to like him. He had that boyish charm and was playful with Scarlett - who tries to resist him - but in the end, their attraction gets the best of them.

I liked some secondary characters like Scott, Jack and the three bodyguards/drivers. They were all there throughout Tarin's recovery and played a big part in keeping him on track. Well not Jack, he was more there for Scarlett towards the end.

I'll admit I wasn't entirely drawn in to this. I think it was Scarlett's history with Austin and the fact that she seemed unwilling to let him go and move on for so long, almost ruining something that had such promise. And then also Jelly - What kind if name is that BTW? And also Posey? - just popping up all the time. They were both like a bad smell, hanging around. And both of them were obsessed with him. I can't really place a finger on it but there was something else that just didn't work for me with this one, too.

All Kinds of Tied Down - Mary Calmes

Book: All Kinds of Tied Down
Author: Mary Calmes
Series: Marshals, #1
Genres: MM Romance, Contemporary
Format: Kindle e-Book
Publication Date: 3rd July 2014

My Rating: πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒœ
Date Finished: 22nd July 2020

Description:

Deputy US Marshal Miro Jones has a reputation for being calm and collected under fire. These traits serve him well with his hotshot partner, Ian Doyle, the kind of guy who can start a fight in an empty room. In the past three years of their life-and-death job, they've gone from strangers to professional coworkers to devoted teammates and best friends. Miro’s cultivated blind faith in the man who has his back… faith and something more.

As a marshal and a soldier, Ian’s expected to lead. But the power and control that brings Ian success and fulfillment in the field isn't working anywhere else. Ian’s always resisted all kinds of tied down, but having no home—and no one to come home to—is slowly eating him up inside. Over time, Ian has grudgingly accepted that going anywhere without his partner simply doesn't work. Now Miro just has to convince him that getting tangled up in heartstrings isn't being tied down at all.

Review:

This has been on my "shelf" on Goodreads for a few years so it's about time I read it.

It starts with a case. Both Marshals are attempting to apprehend a suspect but it's Miro who ends up being body slammed by the guy they're chasing, breaking his wrist in the process. Miro's partner, Ian, tries to take him to the hospital and we see their banter and connection. It's clear they're close but occasionally you see glimpses of there being more between them.

It took a while for those glimpses of more to actually come about. It was a little after half way when Miro finally saw the signs his best friend and partner had been broadcasting for a little while by then. I think his gaydar was a little out of whack because he never seemed to notice when guys were flirting with him.

They did have a really cute dynamic when they finally got together. Both really protective of the other but it was Ian who turned out to be the one who needed reassurance in their relationship.

And Sam Kage made an appearance in this as their boss and I read the first two books of his series, too, a while ago. That was a nice surprise.

I know this series is just based on Miro and Ian and their building relationship and I wouldn't mind continuing this series to see how it pans out.

Black Swan Affair - K.L. Kreig

Description:

I’ve loved him as long as I can remember.

The gangly boy with big brown eyes and unruly hair who grew up into an intoxicating man. He wears scruff like he invented it and ambles with a swagger that makes panties drop.

Killian Shepard.

Shep.

We grew up together. We played Ghost in the Graveyard. Had our own rock band. It didn’t matter that he was five years older than me. It didn’t matter that he looked at me as a kid sister even as I grew into woman. It didn’t even matter when he left me behind to go to college and start his adult life.

He’d be back.
He was always meant to be mine.

He came back, all right. But instead of smelling of promises, he stunk of betrayal. And he destroyed me—us—the day he married my sister instead of me.

So I did the only thing a girl like me in my position could do.

I got my revenge.
I married his brother, Kael.
Now we’re one big happy f*cking family.

Review:

I've had this sitting on my Kindle for 3 years and I had forgotten what this one was all about.

This starts with Maverick getting ready to marry Kael. She's wondering whether she should go through with it when she's been in love with his brother, Killian, for years. Killian comes in, begging her not to do it but considering he's married to her older b*tch of a sister, she ignores him and marries Kael. Maverick struggles with her decision for months afterwards but grows to love her new husband but Killian isn't willing to let her get over him.

It really was a tug of war between the brothers for Maverick's attention and I felt her struggle. They both claimed to love her and want her to be happy but both wanted her with them.

Talk about a headache. One minute I was happily cheering on Killian, the next I wanted to hit him over the head with something heavy. I did not understand him AT ALL! Not until towards the end, anyway.

Kael was a great guy. The more we go through the book the more we learn about him and how long he's been in love with Maverick. It was a little hard to read the parts from years ago when he knew that Killian and Mav were together romantically and he'd been friend-zoned while loving her in secret.

There was a revelation around the 80% mark that had me continuing late into the night with this. I finally put it down around midnight and I just couldn't stop thinking about what was happening in it. What had happened all those years ago to cause such mayhem in these two families. It definitely took me by surprise as I wasn't expecting it.

I don't know if I agree with who she ended up with but both guys were great. I guess in hindsight it was pretty obvious which guy she was going to end up, really.

The only thing I wasn't a fan of was how much sex was going on. I just skipped over half of them because repetitive or what?

Hollywood Playboy - Natasha Madison

Description:

Behind the "lights, camera, action" of Hollywood lies a world of deception, love, and seduction.

Are you ready for Hollywood Royalty?

Jessica

An entertainment journalist was the last thing I thought I would be doing.
I thought once I got my degree, I would be reporting on stories that made a difference, but now all I do is report on who broke up with who and who is dating who.
I was over it.
Then I got my next assignment.

He’s Hollywood’s bad boy.
He works hard, and he plays even harder.
He’s rude, he’s condescending, and he’s made it known he doesn’t want me on the tour.

With one month on the road with him, two things might happen
One, I may never work in this industry again.
Two, I may just be like everyone else and fall for Hollywood’s Playboy.

Review:

Jessica is an entertainment journalist and good at it but one celebrity in particular does not get on with her: Tyler Beckett. She's always ready with a scoop on him only for him to go public with it before she can. When Jessica is asked to be on the press junket for Tyler's latest film they clash a few times before getting into an argument that makes them both realise how wrong they've been about each other and they begin to grow closer. It's starts as a kind of friendship before becoming more.

I did enjoy this. Mainly for the relationship between Jessica and Tyler but it wasn't always smooth sailing for them. First they don't even like each other, then they come to a truce to try and get along and before long they actually become friends that want to be more. It was an emotional ride towards the end and I had a good old cry, I'll admit.

I don't think I'd like to be a celebrity, having no privacy and everything from your past being brought back to haunt you. Luckily Tyler has a fairly clean life, though people are always willing to sell false stories about him and others. Tyler is good at handling the press and treats the ones on the tour like friends, taking them out for meals at amazing but little known places, sending them for spa days, etc. With Jessica, Tyler just wants her to spend time with him and they have some really cute days out all over the tour cities.

Some of the secondary characters were cool like Kellie and Tyler's parents. One character I wanted to slap silly and Tyler and Jessica, I just wanted to hug.

I'm intrigued by Kellie's story and her romance with her bodyguard who she has a history with so I'll keep my eyes open for her book.

Description:

Being bad never felt so good...

Everything in my office is off-limits. Making a charity calendar of the hot guys on your floor? Not allowed.

Shrinking your boss' underwear when he sends it for dry-cleaning? Can't do that either.

But those things keep the natural balance. See, Avery Banks, our resident rising star, is a shark.

The tall, blond, and gorgeous kind with zero patience and even less forgiveness.

Good thing I'm the Mae West of executive assistants. I live to put grown men in their place.

He wasn't supposed to find out.

Now he's made it his personal mission to screw me the way I screwed him.

OK. Not exactly the way I screwed him..

Avery's new game is hot. Messy. Twisted.

But he's my boss. And what we're doing is strictly NSFW.

Luckily, Avery and I have one thing in common.

We both suck at following the rules.

Review:

This is my second book by the author and I'm hoping it's as good as the other book I read Stripped, which I gave 4.5 stars.

So in this one Charlotte AKA Charlie is the personal assistant to Avery and they kind of spend a lot of the time winding each other up and we learn a few of these times in their little arguments but things backfire when Avery fires her. Charlie can't quite believe it and tries to make amends for some of the stuff she's done and in a spur of the moment thing, they end up kissing. And then more.

I got pulled into this early on. I loved their banter and how they quickly fell into their attraction and lust when they finally thought about how their antics had been a sort of flirting, annoying each other to get a fiery reaction.

I loved these two characters. Charlie was a bit of a wild card and Avery was a straight-laced guy. They were pretty much polar opposites but together they were great. It was hot and passionate and fun.

This author is definitely one I'm enjoying reading and will be keeping an eye out for more of her books in the future.

Description:

In 8 years, Marlon James will be one of the brightest rising stars in the music industry.
Bristol Gray will be his tough, no-nonsense manager.

But when they first meet, she’s a college student finding her way in the world, and he’s an artist determined to make his way in it.
From completely different worlds, all the things that should separate them only draw them closer.

It’s a beautiful beginning, but where will the story end?

Review:

This has been borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

This starts with Marlon/Grip heading to the airport to pick up his best friends twin sister from the airport. She's feisty and Grip can't help but feel attracted to her. Bristol just wants to reconnect with her brother, who went to live with their uncle on the other side of the country when he was a teen after their parents put pressure on him regarding his musical ability. Grip is a rapper and DJ and a few other things as well and Bristol can't help but be drawn to him.

I don't know about this one. I got that they had some really intense conversations about stuff that people generally don't talk about but I wasn't totally convinced by these two. I kinda get the holding back because she's only here for a week and your best friends sister but... I don't know. It didn't quite work for me. And then that end bit with Grip's, erm, ex? Lover? It's put me off continuing the series, though it's likely she's going to end up lying.

This is my second book by the author and neither have really done it for me. I may wait a while before reading another.

The Ballerino and The Biker - Rebecca James

Description:

Most of his young life, Morgan Wentworth has dreamed of becoming a principal dancer in a prestigious corps de ballet. After years studying the art in Milan, Morgan comes home to New York City to apprentice with the Manhattan Ballet Company only to be hit by the unexpected death of his older brother, Jake. The grieving dancer learns his life is threatened by a dangerous rival motorcycle gang and that pierced, tattooed, HOT biker Zeke Ivers has been assigned by Jake’s MC to guard him. Saddled with the constant presence of the infuriating man, Morgan juggles the demands of an exhausting dance schedule as well as his new responsibilities as CEO of his family’s multi-million-dollar company. He never expects to develop an attraction for the straight, obnoxious biker, but that’s exactly what happens.

Estranged from an abusive family, Zeke Ivers has lived at the Sentinel’s club house and worked on cars since he was a teen. When fellow club member Jake Wentworth and a rival club president’s girl are killed on Jake’s bike, the Sentinel’s president delegates the protection of Jake’s little brother, Morgan, to Zeke. Zeke would do anything for the club that pulled him off the streets, but Morgan’s a ballet dancer, for Christ’s sake, as well as annoying as hell. Still, Zeke finds himself inexplicably drawn to the young man. The more attracted Zeke becomes to Morgan, the more the biker is forced to examine his sexuality and decide whether two people from opposite sides of the tracks could possibly have a future together, or if Zeke should do what is fast becoming too painful to consider: let Morgan go

Review:

This has been borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

In this one Morgan has just buried his older brother, Jake, who was part of an MC. He was the only family that Morgan had left in the world and now so he focuses on his ballet with the help of his best friend, Nikki. Only Morgan arrives home to someone in his apartment and he struggles against the man. It turns out the man, Zeke, is from Jake's MC and is there to protect him from a rival biker club after Jake died with a female from the other MC. Zeke is drawn to Morgan and vice versa so it's not long before sparks are flying, though Zeke is adamant he's straight.

This definitely felt like a gay-for-you story. Zeke wasn't attracted to any other guys really, though in the end he settled on himself being bisexual. He's the strong silent type and completely opposite to ballerino - Italian for male ballerina -  Morgan. They do have an intense attraction for each other and it takes a while for anything to happen but once it does, it quickly turns into more than physical attraction. Opposites attract and all that.

I'm intrigued by some of the other MC members like Blaze and what's going to happen between Dante and Swish.

Speaking of the MC, we didn't really see much of that side of the story. Most of the time Zeke was working on cars in the garage or the guys were settling down to meals together. We know the MC run a business out back that films their own pornography but that's about it. And we had that short bit at the start involving the Hedonist's rivals wanting to hurt Morgan in retaliation for the death of one of theirs but that was it.

That end bit with Morgan's stalker was a bit strange, if you ask me. I wasn't expecting it to take that turn or be that person and it threw me a little but it all worked out in the end due to Morgan's quick thinking.

As mentioned above I do think I'll look up this series in the future to see what happens with Dante and Swish and Blaze with his questions on gay sex etc.

It's the moment Kieran and Lexi have been preparing for. The Magical Summit.

Ready or not, they will take their assembled team into the belly of the beast. The stakes couldn't be higher. If the powers that be don't approve of Kieran, he will not earn the official title of the Demigod of San Francisco.

The real danger concerns Lexi, however. With Kieran away in meetings, she must brave the treacherous halls of the Summit with just her crew and her wards, fighting for social placement and status, open to attack from all angles.

She could've never expected what comes at her. No one could've.

Prepare yourself for this epic conclusion to the Demigods of San Francisco series!

Review:

This has been borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

This is the last book in the series! How am I going to survive without more Kieran and Lexi and co?

Anyway, they are now at the Magical Summit. Kieran is hoping for his place as San Francisco's Demigod to be approved as well as his link to Alexis. In the meantime, every Demigod's minions are prowling the grounds of the ginormous estate looking for battles, including Lexi and co.

This was quite fun. It was clear to see that Lexi and the gang were some of the most skilled fighters in the place. We met some fun characters and some stuff comes out that I hadn't expected, which was great. And then that end bit with Jack. I really do love this group of people.

I don't have the words to express how much I enjoyed this. It's a great ending to a brilliant series.

And then that bit with the green eyed jinn and Daisy... I'm thinking she may get her own series where that bit will be explored.

Description:

One thing has become incredibly clear to Alexis and Kieran, if they hope to last in the arena of Demigods, they'll need a more robust defense team.

They must take two incredibly dangerous journeys, seeking the prized talents other Demigods would kill for. Except, there is a reason other Demigods don't have these magical workers--they are as ruthless as they are dangerous, and the last thing they want is to be on a Demigod's team.

If that isn't enough, Alexis has received an invitation from Demigod Lydia, the only Hades Demigod who hasn't openly declared war. She's talking like they could be allies, but those of Hades cannot be trusted. A trap is just as likely as a handshake. Still, it's a chance they must take.

Any one of these trips could be their last, but to back down would be the most dangerous of all

Review:

This has been borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

This starts with Lexi and some of the crew heading up a mountain in the hopes of recruiting a strong rock/stone giant to their crew as they gear up to appear at the Magical Summit in a few months time where Kieran will hope to become the recognised Demigod of San Francisco. Kieran doesn't know where she's heading and they're all hoping to get the giant on side before he realises. Then a ghost who used to be a spirit walker gives Alexis details of someone else who'd be good for the team and they head out after him, too. There's also the issue of Lydia, a Demigod of Egypt, who has invited them to her territory after being caught sneaking around their property. Kieran is hoping for an alliance with her so they go.

I do still really love this group of people. They are one big extended family that look after each other and compliment each others abilities magically. The new additions are great characters and I quickly grew to like both of them. I loved watching them all kick arse in this at the end. I was willing them on and grinning like an idiot at times.

There was a little twist/surprise at the end revolving around Magnus, Lexi's dad, that has me intrigued to see what might go down in the last book at the magical summit, so I'm off to go borrow it from the KU Library.
